WagNou Boerdery Beefmaster Stud

The Beefmaster Cattle Breed

- Facts/description of a Beefmaster -

Beefmaster is a synthetic breed that is genetically composed of ± 50% Brahman, 25% Hereford and 25% Shorthorn blood.

Throughout the history of the Beefmaster breed the main objective was meat production. The best cattle produce the most high quality meat at the lowest cost, which means more profit. The breeding and management program that is followed is based on nature's oldest law: "Survival of the fittest." Upon selection six economically important traits are required:  fertility, temperament, weight, conformation, hardiness and milk production.

It is a well-known fact that Beefmaster Farmers are generally running larger cattle herds than most other breeds.  Less farmers who holds more stock, proves that the Beefmaster breed is an excellent breed for extensive farming conditions.  WagNou Boerdery compares our data with approximately 60 000 Beefmaster Stud cattle registered in the RSA.

Excellent genetics are used to produce veld-adapted animals with performance data supported by meticulous record keeping.  Wagnou Beefmaster Stud received merit awards at SA Stamboek for the quality and application of our data on numerous occasions.

WagNou Beefmaster Stud imported superb genetics from large, well-known Beefmaster Studs in the RSA, e.g. Bos Blanco, WO, and Alzu Breeders.  Although our animals are managed extensively, in the harsh conditions of the Omaheke district, they perform outstanding when compared to the RSA performance statistics.

Furthermore, some of WagNou Beefmasters have been selected to participate in a genomic project to analyse and evaluate Beefmaster genetics of Southern Africa to that of the USA.

The WagNou Beefmaster Stud consists of approximately 600 registered cattle and the scientific approach to Stud breeding includes the following standard procedures:

    • Strict weight recording, birth / 7 / 12 / 18, months of age.
    • Mother/calf weight at weaning.
    • DNA confirmation of all stud animals, including heifers to record bull performance.

The WagNou Beefmaster Stud performs under veld conditions.  Growing cattle are veld raised on a production lick to maximise animal genetic growth potential.

We strive to produce polled Beefmaster Bulls. Currently, 50% of WagNou Beefmaster Stud calves are polled (or “scurs” - loose horns that do not fully develop).

- Graze, walk and breed! -

Bulls, selected to produce quality calves for our fellow farmers, are stringently selected on their visual appearance including scrotum circumference as well as on their performance records.  A successful bull must be able to effortlessly perform his basic tasks:  graze, walk and breed!

Bulls are offered for sale at the age of 3 years.  All bulls are DNA Sire-certified and tested for fertility and venereal diseases (Trich and Vibrio).
